Who is responsible for this app

StoryWren is made by Antony Njoroge Mutharia, an individual developer based in Canada, who is the data controller for anything on this page. Questions go to .

The app makes no network connections

StoryWren contains no networking code at all. Every story, illustration, and narration is stored on the device when the app is installed, so the whole app works with no internet connection — nothing is ever transmitted anywhere, because there is nowhere in the app for it to go.

What is stored on your device

The app writes exactly one thing to your device: a small file recording which books you have chosen to hide from the shelf, kept in the app's own storage area. It holds book titles only — nothing that identifies you, your child, or your device — is never transmitted anywhere, and is deleted automatically when the app is deleted.

No third-party analytics

StoryWren links no analytics SDK, first-party or third-party. Nothing about how the app is used — which books are opened, how long a child listens, or anything else — is measured, recorded, or sent anywhere.

No advertising

StoryWren shows no advertising and links no advertising SDK. There is no ad network involved in this app in any capacity.

No sharing with third parties

Nothing is shared with anyone, because nothing is collected in the first place. There is no channel in the app through which data could reach a third party.

No other collection

Beyond the local hidden-books file described above, StoryWren does not read or store any other user or device data — no location, no contacts, no photos, no microphone or camera access, no identifiers used for tracking.

How the stories, pictures, and voice were made

The stories are by Beatrix Potter and are in the public domain. The illustrations were newly created for this app using generative image tools, and the narration was produced with a commercially licensed text-to-speech service — both during the app's production, on files only, before the app was ever published. Neither tool is contacted while the app is running, and no child's data, voice, or image has ever been sent to either of them.

Children's privacy

StoryWren is designed for young children and is held to the same standard described on this page regardless of the user's age. Because the app collects no personal information from anyone, it does not collect personal information from children under 13 as defined by the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), and no verifiable parental consent is required under COPPA for this app.

For the same reason, StoryWren carries out no processing of personal data under Article 8 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the UK GDPR: there is no lawful basis to establish, because there is no data to process, and no international data transfer of any kind occurs. The app is also built consistently with the UK's Age Appropriate Design Code — data minimization by default, since the default (and only) state is that no data is collected at all.

If you contact us

The one real exception to "nothing is collected" is if you choose to write to us. If you email , we receive your email address and whatever you wrote, the same as any email. We use it only to answer you. It is never added to a mailing list, used for marketing, or shared or sold to anyone. This contact link only appears in the app behind a short comprehension check meant for a grown-up, described below.

The parental gate

Two things in the app — the contact link above, and the controls for hiding a book from the shelf — sit behind a simple check: a three-digit number is spelled out in words, and whoever is holding the device types the matching digits. It exists so a young child does not accidentally leave the app or change what appears on the shelf. The number is generated on the device each time, nothing about it is stored or transmitted, and it is not an account, login, or password of any kind.

What Apple receives

Apple collects its own download and, where a user has opted in to share diagnostics, crash data for every app distributed through the App Store — this happens independently of StoryWren and is governed by Apple's own privacy practices, not this policy. Where a user has opted in, only an aggregate, non-identifying crash report reaches us as the developer; the app itself sends nothing.

Requests, retention, and deletion

Because nothing is collected, there is no record of you or your child to request a copy of, correct, or delete. The one file the app keeps (the hidden-books list, described above) lives only on your device and is removed automatically when the app is deleted — there is nothing on our side to retain or erase.

Changes to this policy

If this policy ever changes, the update will be posted on this page with a new effective date below.

Effective date: 6 August 2026 (supersedes the version dated 30 July 2026).
